The Science of Laser For Hair Regrowth

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern balding, is the most prevalent form of hair loss for mend and women. "Andro" is the Greek prefix for "male" "man" "masculine". The term "androgenic" literally is "of man"- "man" representing "mankind" and refers to the androgen (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone) that is essential to produce male pattern hair loss. "Genetic" refers to the inherited gene that is imperative of male pattern hair loss to occur. Androgenetic alopecia in men is diagnosed under the Norwood-Hamilton Scale of Male Pattern Baldness, while in women it is classified under the Ludwig Classification Scale of Female Pattern Baldness.

Androgenetic alopecia is correlated with high levels of DHT (a testosterone derivative, dihydrotestosterone) on the scalp. DHT is thought to penetrate the scalp and cause hair follicle miniaturization, a phenomenon in which follicles become smaller and eventually incapable of supporting a healthy hair growth cycle.

Low level laser therapy is believed to increase blood flow in the scalp and stimulate metabolism is catagen or telogen follicles, resulting in the production of anagen hair. In theory: The photons of light act on cytochrome C oxidase leading to the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This is converted to cycle AMP in the hair follicle cells, releasing energy and stimulatingly metabolic processes necessary for hair growth. Release of nitic oxide for cells leads to increased vascularization to the scalp distributing nutrients and oxygen to the hair roots. Excessive building-up of DHT is prevented.

A widely accepted theory is that LLLT, particularly at wavelengths in the red (visible) range, affects the functioning of the stem cells that cause hair growth. LLLT activates cytochrome c oxidase and increases mitochondrial electron transport, which leads to an increase in ATP and subsequent reversal of hair follicles from the dormant telogen stage of growth or anagen stage.
